Article Body: The sparkling gem of the Pacific Northwest; Portland, Oregon, population 583,776, is quickly expanding, and is truly a diamond in the rough. Affectionately termed as "The City of Roses" (because of its spectacular rose gardens) and "Stumptown" (for its deep-seeded roots inside the timber industry), Portland Oregon can be an artist's dream and is quickly becoming the area to see, and to be seen specifically music-minded folks. First, just a little history that explains why this city is so cool. In recent decades, Portland went through a renaissance, of sorts. It has embraced culture and creativity and growth on countless levels and has changed into a beacon for others to follow. The town of Portland is credited for launching the very first microbrewery in America, in a old rope factory inside the Industrial District. And since the inception from the first craft brewery, Portland has led the country in creating a booming marketplace of innovation and inventive experimentation, both locally in Oregon, and globally. While some of the greatest beers continue to come out of Oregon, Portland is definitely the leader in tapping into the economic potential of this marketplace. While constantly producing quality microbrews with individuality and integrity, Portland proudly possesses a couple other nicknames, "America's Microbrew Capital", and my personal favorite, "Beervana".
So to the music... Situated only 200 miles south of Seattle, Washington, Portland is quickly becoming a robust contender for capturing another title, that of "Music Capital of the Pacific Northwest". Though people like their microbrews, one cannot live on beer alone. Local residents, and visitors, alike, also want entertainment. In comes the Portland music scene. The choice for getting your music in Portland can be just as vast, and seemingly as endless, as the amount of taps you see behind the bars within this town (i.e. that is a lot!). From alternative rock, to country, to heavy metal, to techno, whatever it is you want, you'll find it here. An instant search on virtually any day will produce a number of events in Portland. It becomes an excellent location for musicians to produce their mark. Plus, you already know it's a excellent spot to be when the tough decisions involve which beer to drink, what music to hear, and which place to go to get your fix, whatever it might be.
More recently, Portland, Oregon has been put into the spotlight through the hit comedy, Portlandia, that has so accurately exploited the location, noted for its quirky idiosyncrasies and off-beat populace. But in the center of the creative genius behind Portlandia is a robust music core. Not surprising, considering both stars with the sketch comedy, Carrie Brownstein & Fred Armisen, are musicians, first and foremost. By simply studying the talent that is highlighted on the program, you recruit a clear sense that music is in the middle of the peculiar city. With cameos by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney), Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), James Mercer (The Shins), Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday), Sarah McLachlan and many more, you receive a apparent sense that there is a sound base that contributes to creating this original little utopia such a special location. The sketch comedy has highlighted the best of Portland, a location where one can be you. It's a spot to drink great beer, eat delicious food and listen to some excellent music on virtually any day.
